15 June 2021 | Europe

The Mediterranean is not necessarily the first destination you think of for surfing. The choices are often the Landes and the Basque Country. However, contrary to popular belief, there are good waves on the Mediterranean coast. If you want to surf while enjoying the sun, here is a selection of surf spots to try in the destination.

Six-Four-Les-Plages, a good surfing spot to discover

Very popular with the Varois, the vast Bonnegrâce beach in Six-Four-Les-Plages is an excellent place to enjoy fabulous surfing sessions in the Mediterranean. Stretching over a kilometre in length, it is home to the famous Brutal Beach spot. Surfers and longboarders go wild here when the Mistral wind is right. You will find easy waves there. As the spot works quite often, you should know that the affluence is rather important there.

A few kilometres away, you will find the seaside resort of Bandol. The latter offers a good spot, near the Anse de Renécros. Due to the presence of a reef, however, it is more suitable for bodyboarding. If your trip will last several days, why not add a touch of escape to your getaway by taking an all-inclusive Mediterranean cruise?

Palavas-les-Flots, a paradise for water sports enthusiasts

In the Hérault department, not far from Montpellier, the famous seaside resort of Palavas-les-Flots is a great destination to go surfing in the Mediterranean. The resort is especially known for offering a multitude of facilities and sports associations dedicated to water activities. From kayaking to jousting, from scuba diving to windsurfing, there is something for everyone.

During the summer season, many surf, longboard, bodyboard, stand-up paddle and kitesurfing clubs flourish here. To enjoy great surfing sessions, the beach break of Palavas-les-Flots is an exceptional spot to experience in the Mediterranean. It stands out for the quality of its waves, even if they are irregular. The beach of Roquilles is another interesting spot, because there are beautiful rights and lefts.

Gruissan, a nice destination for surfing

Located in the department of Aude, north of Port-la-Nouvelle, the commune of Gruissan attracts travellers for its port, its beaches and its salt marshes. It is also a real land of welcome for windsurfers and kitesurfers who come there every year by thousands. It should be noted that the city of Aude is also very popular with surfers.

The locality shelters the wild beach of Mateille, a natural site classified by the Conservatoire du littoral, which is considered to be one of the windiest spots of the Mediterranean. Thus, with the reinforcement of the Tramontane, the spot of Gruissan frequently presents fabulous conditions for the surfers. Moreover, the offshore wind digs the waves well, which become very pleasant to ride.

Villefranche-sur-Mer, a spot dedicated to experienced surfers

The surf spot of Villefranche-sur-Mer is located in the Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur, in the city of Villefranche-sur-Mer. It is known to offer a powerful right hander that can reach 2 to 3 meters in height and break violently when the swell conditions are met.

Known to be dangerous, this spot is reserved for experienced surfers. The current is strong and the launch is difficult, especially because of the presence of a reef and a cliff. The best time to surf on this spot is during the rising tide. For experienced surfers, riding the waves of the spot of Villefranche-sur-Mer is a great challenge.
